Past Events

In this section we'll keep a catalogue of past events—with a small review—so that everyone can get a full sense of how active we are!

PYS Year's Review & BBQ

Saturday July 13th 2013

On the last Saturday of our 2012/13 calendar we celebrated all we had accomplished with a Choral Review and BBQ held at East Community Centre.

Boy was it a hot day!! After rehearsal we had a picnic lunch, played a game of rounders and then performed a short Choral Review for the parents in the afternoon. The BBQ, itself, was held after the Choral Review and gave everyone the chance to swap their plans for the summer break.

The Really Big Chorus 2013

Our yearly visit to “The Really Big Chorus” took place on Sunday 7th July. On a very hot day in London the Royal Albert Hall was a little warm for comfort at times but the Senior Choir members who took the trip, to sing with 2000 others from across the UK and abroad, had an exciting time!

Letter from John Shearman - Labour Cllr for Park Ward

Letter of thanks Cllr Shearman

Our big event for this year was a smash hit with all who attended; and we would like to thank all the young people who worked so hard to put together an outstanding concert. “The Peterborough Big Sing 2013″ was an event that, with the comments we are receiving, now needs to be followed up by another Big Sing to commemorate our 20th Anniversary in 2014.

To all the schools who joined us this time, do sign up for next year and spread the word!!

Lastly a really big thank you to all the staff at KingsGate who helped our day go without a hitch; to Russ, Graham and Paul … we look forward to seeing you all again.

For those of you with Facebook accounts you can now see photos from the day which have been posted in a new ‘Big Sing’ album; just click on this link to view them … The Peterborough Big Sing 2013

Sing4Spring 2013

PYS performed at Hereward Harmony's ‘Sing4Spring’ concert again this year; delivering a reprise of some of the repertoire sung earlier alongside The Gildenburgh at our joint concert in March, This Fair Isle. A couple of pieces we were also polishing for our Community Project with Schools from across the City – The Peterborough Big Sing 2013

The 2013 Spring term concert was held jointly with The Gildenburgh Choir, in March, and amongst the other repertoire we sang on the theme of the Countryside was a joint performance of a canatata by renowned local composer Patrick Hawes called ‘The Land’.

The concert, held on Saturday 16th March, at St. John's Church, Cathedral Square, was really well attended and PYS received some lovely comments from the audience which included some of our past members!

Kathryn Parsons – Thank you PYS for singing with us on Saturday – you sounded magnificent :-)

2012 Xmas Concert

2012 Xmas Concert

It was a wonderfully relaxed evening with the two choirs presenting some firm favourites as well as other classic festive songs. Both our Junior and Senior choirs sang beautifully and combined really well with the Choral Society for the finale Gaudete. A big thank you to Matt and the Choir … time to have a well earned Christmas break!

Weekend at Buckden Towers

Saturday September 15th 2012

Buckden Towers

Buckden Towers

What a wonderfully enjoyable weekend and a Big Thank You to both Nicola and Matt for taking rehearsals and allowing the young people to have so much fun expressing themselves through music. As always the food was plentiful and the Buckden Towers grounds are great to take a leisurely stroll around during break times.

When are we doing it again?!

A number of photos from the weekend have been posted on Facebook; click on the Buckden Towers Folder link to take a look! If you don't have a Facebook account, don't worry, the same photos will be posted in an online gallery, on this website, before the half-term holidays.

AGM 2012

Saturday September 8th 2012

Thank you to those parents who attended this year’s Annual General Meeting on Saturday 8th September.

The key points to note are:

  1. Matt Smith has agreed to take over from Nicola as Musical Director for this academic year; I welcome him to PYS and hope that he will enjoy his time with us. Matt works at Hampton College and I believe this will help our organisation to strengthen its links with Schools
  2. We will be joining Peterborough Choral Society for their ‘Christmas Carols Concert’ in December. Please put the date in your diaries – Tuesday 11th December
  3. The Gildenburgh have invited us to perform a new composition with them in March entitled ‘The Land’. Music will be available to us before the October half-term so we can start rehearsing
  4. Keep an eye out for more information about PYS ‘Big Project for the year, culminating in a workshop and concert in May

Should you wish to receive a full copy of the AGM minutes don’t hesitate to ask.

Thank you, Chris (PYS Chairman)

Swing into Summer

Swing into Summer Poster

Swing into Summer Poster

Our end of year celebration concert had a ‘Swing’ theme and it was really exciting to perform with the Fortissimo Swing Band. The concert was held on the last Friday of term and was a wonderful celebration of the enormously busy year the choir had had; a wonderful way to start the summer holidays.

Peterborough Young Singers returned to the Fleet to perform on behalf of our chosen charity Kidney Research UK; more specifically for the Alex Appeal.

Olympic Torch Celebration

Tuesday July 3rd 2012

On the evening of Tuesday 3rd July Peterborough Young Singers had the opportunity to take part in a group celebration marking the Olympic Torch passing through our city. We sang with other members of the Peterborough Music Making organisation performing repertoire from the ‘roaring 1920s’, including ‘Singing in the Rain’!! A very apt piece considering the summer weather we had been having and also with the rain we had whilst at Burghley House. The choir were able to see the torch bearer on the way in to the Stately Home and on its way back out again to the Wansford Nene Valley Railway.
