Richard Frostick Workshop

Sunday March 8th 2009

Free workshop sessions at Longthorpe School given by Richard Frostick, the Founder of Islington Music Centre, were organised by Members of the senior choir.

The workshops were split into 3 separate age groups. Each group practised three or four songs under Richard's expert guidance.

Richard taught posture and breathing techniques that greatly improved the quality of the sound that they produced.

Richard really motivated the children in all the groups. In the short time available he was able to take groups of children who had not sung together before and get some wonderful singing from them. The younger children enjoyed marching up and down singing as they prepared to perform a song on the stage. There was an xfactor style contest, with wonderful group and solo performances. Helen stood in for Cheryl to help Richard do the judging.

Comments from them at the end included "It really rocked", "You bring singing to life", "Not a bad thing to do on a Sunday morning" and "Awesome".

A big thank you must go to the senior choir members who organised this workshop and ran the 'behind the scenes' activities needed for a successful event. Our thanks also goes to Peterborough Youth Bank who provided the funds for this workshop.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the carol singing and bag pack at Morrisons. Your efforts have raised an amazing £281.10 for the choir funds. Thanks to all at Morrisons who made us feel very welcome—and to the all important contributors, the Morrisons customers who were generous indeed!

"Singday" 2008 : The Armed Man, The Royal Albert Hall

Sunday July 13th 2008

What an event to take part in!

The National Day of Singing on 13th July focused on Karl Jenkins' contemporary classic The Armed Man and the work's foundation themes of war and peace were echoed in the orchestral works the 1812 Overture (Tchaikovsky) and movements from The Planets (Holst).

Peterborough Young Singers Senior Choir joined "The Really Big Chorus" for this event in support of the Alzheimer's Society. The singers were accompanied by the Festival Orchestra and the evening performance was a sell out.The Royal Albert Hall was alive with music and the efforts and energy was truly appreciated.

It was a wonderful experience for the youngsters to sing at such a prestigious venue amongst up to 3000 voices and to be accompanied by the London Festival Orchestra.

All the choirs performing together at the Young Voices Concert

Peterborough Young Singers were joined by choirs from Stanground College and Fulbridge Road Primary School for an evening of collaborative music making! Packed with a range of music from traditional folk songs to popular hits from the 80's and 90's, the event delivered another great opportunity to hear young people at their best!

Peterborough Festival was represented by Deputy Mayor Gul Nawaz and Cllr Akhbar who offered congratulations to everyone involved. We were also pleased that Joe Ballard, Festival Organiser, was able to attend the performance.

Congratulations to Stanground Singers for their debut performance and to Fulbridge youngsters who were allowed to stay up late on a school night!

It was a wonderful event to close this year's calendar with and this "end of year" concert gave an appropriate opportunity for our "retiring" singers to sing out in style. We also said goodbye to our Musical Director, Areti and accompanist, Rachel. Good luck to everyone in the future!
