Vivaldi - St. Martin's, Stamford

Saturday April 26th 2008

Members of the senior choir were invited to join former PYS musical director Fergus Black and other musicians at St Martin's, Stamford in a celebration of the music of Antonio Vivaldi. They enjoyed the afternoon "come and sing" workshop on the Vivaldi Magnificat RV 611 and Gloria RV589 and performed in the evening concert.

Peterborough Music Festival

Venues around the city were alive with music as the music festival competitors entertained and engaged their audiences and adjudicators. Congratulations to the Young Singers who entered individual instrumental and vocal categories, the competition was strong all round so it was excellent to hear of the successes—very well done to all!

The choirs performed in their categories on Saturday morning.

The Youth Choir were awarded a "Distinction" for "an excellent performance, technically and artistically" of "O Waly Waly" and "Oh Happy Fair" with the adjudicator commenting particularly on the inclusion of unaccompanied pieces in a repertoire. The overall winners of the category were the Key Theatre choir—our congratulations to them!

The Junior Choir were awarded a "Commended" for "a convincing performance, technically and artistically" of "Sister Awake" and "All Things Bright and Beautiful". The adjudicator commented on the testing nature of the opening piece for such young people—a testament to the commitment of the Musical Directors to challenge the youngsters to improve and achieve at the highest level. He also commented that smiles would not look out of place on some little faces—but we all know how hard it is to relax under these conditions. The juniors were awarded the Elizabeth Henson Memorial Trophy—they all smiled then!

Peterborough Young Singers hosted a collaboration of voices showcasing talented young people from schools around the city, plus our own music makers.

2008 has been designated "The Year of the Assistance Dog" and the concert raised both funds and awareness of this important and valuable service.

Our thanks go to Jack Hunt School and to the wonderful ladies who signed non-stop all evening, as well as the Children from Fulbridge Primary and Longthorpe Primary who helped us make this event such a success.

It was a wonderful evening and lots of fun as always.

Lite FM and St. John's Church

We enjoyed the hospitality of Keith and the early morning crew at Lite FM as we recorded some Christmas carols to entertain the breakfast show listeners.Then it was a short walk across the street to the beautiful St. John's Church to perform for the church visitors as they were able to relax to the soothing sounds of gentle carols.

By invitation Peterborough Young Singers returned to the Fleet to perform with other artists at this event. There was a magnificent guest list with a variety of skills to demonstrate; singing, dancing and instrumental expertise. An entertaining evening!

Peterborough Young Singers returned to the popular festival at the East of England Showground to entertain shoppers with harmonious renditions of some favourite carols.

Peterborough Young Singers took part in a workshop run by the internationally acclaimed "Swingle Singers" as part of the 80th anniversary of the Friends of Peterborough Cathedral celebratory weekend.

Peterborough Festival Concert

Peterborough Cathedral provided a grand venue for a grand occasion as Peterborough Young Singers were accompanied by guests The Texas Youth Choir, Caster Primary School Choir and Farcet Primary School Singing Club.

The Myths and Legends theme of the festival required a repertoire both eclectic and electric. There were independent performances by the hosts and guests, plus collaborative pieces, concluding with a spectacular finale with all the singers centre stage.

This event was all the more remarkable because the singers had only been able to accomplish one full rehearsal earlier in the evening—quite a feat for the youngsters who ranged in age from 7 to 19.

The audience were entertained by an enthusiastic and talented group of young people and the compliments offered were well received and well deserved!

Peterborough Young Singers lined up with a variety of other musicians and entertainers to perform in Central Park at the start of the Peterborough Festival Week. The weather was fine and the entertainment marvellous.

Fergus Black "Farewell Concert"

Fergus Black, a founder member, expertly guided the choirs from the beginning until he announced his retirement from the group in September 2006.

In recognition of the dedication and support Fergus provided for many years, existing members of Peterborough Young Singers were joined by former members, some from the original line up and performed at a special concert to say "Thank You, Fergus. Look at us now"

Other guests included "Freddie and Friends" New Orleans Jazz Band and "Retro" from Nottingham plus many of the successful young musicians from the Peterborough Music Festival 2007

Peterborough Music Making

Peterborough Music Making unveiled their new website with a celebrity launch at the Broadway Theatre. Aled Jones hosted the gala event and Peterborough Young Singers were present at the celebrations.

The website aims to act as a focal point for the promotion of live music in the Greater Peterborough area by providing a means to encourage mutual support, co-operation and development.

Music at St. Martin's, Stamford

The "Music at St. Martin's" programme included an evening performance by Peterborough Young Singers. This concert was particularly special as it was the inaugural event for Areti Wright and Peter Stobart as Musical Directors of Peterborough Young Singers.

The audience were impressed by the quality of the singing during the evening and commented that it was "very professional for such young people". A reflection of the dedication and effort expended by all, at all ages!

Morrison's Supermarket Christmas Carol Singing

Last minute Christmas shopping is habitually frenzied and fraught, but the shoppers at Morrison's on Lincoln Road, Peterborough were soothed by the sweetest sound of seasonal songs, sung by suitably attired carollers. Santa hats and reindeer antlers mixed with elves ears and red noses! The singers entertained and packed bags to raise ever necessary funds. Their efforts were very much appreciated and rewarded by the Christmas shoppers, many appreciative compliments were received, one shopper said "It helps put me in the mood for Christmas and makes the shopping much more bearable!"

The now almost traditional walk from the rehearsal venue to St. John's Church in Cathedral Square, Peterborough, seems to get shorter each year.The singers warmed the hearts of many visitors to the Church as they filled the building with bright carols and Christmas cheer. We followed this with a live and unaccompanied broadcast on Lite FM with Keith Dalton.

Weary commuters at Peterborough Railway Station, ended or began their journey with the joyful sound of Christmas carols and songs, heartily rendered by an enthusiastic group of PYS carol singers. Travellers made requests for their favourite Christmas tunes and donations were gratefully received.

PCAE hosted an Austrian Evening at the East Community Centre with excerpts from The Sound of Music.Members of Peterborough Young Singers were transformed into the Captain's children and were a real hit with the audience.

The Christmas season began in Peterborough with a Festival at the East of England Showground. Traders offered their wares for sale and when shoppers rested to sample the Christmas Food on offer, they were treated to the soothing sound of Peterborough Young Singers to reinvigorate their enthusiasm for the festive feast!
